Use alphabet cards, such as those children make for Lower-Case Letter Shapes or Sandy Sounds, as patterns. Magnetic letters may work, too.

The first letter that interests most children is the one with which their name begins. As children develop more literacy skills through reading, seeing children’s cubby labels, following recipes, and making lists, they become curious about other letters.

Help children discover new sculpting skills (coil, pinch, roll, cut, tear, mold, braid).

Choose a letter. It might be the first one in your name, your friend’s name, or a favorite word such as dinosaur. Find a sample of the shape of the letter.

On a plastic place mat, roll Crayola® Dough into a coil. Shape the coil into the letter. Use a craft stick to cut the dough. Or roll the dough flat, and use a craft stick to cut out the letter shape. Can you find other ways to shape dough into a letter?
6.
Try making several different letters, both upper- and lower-case.
