Row, Row

Row, Row lesson plan

  • 1.

Boat songs are great for children to expand vocabulary, explore concepts about transportation and water, and use movement. Sing and act songs such as ;Row Your Boat,; ;Gone to the Mailboat,; and ;Erie Canal.

  • 2.

Generate enthusiasm. Read about boats. If possible, visit a wharf or ask someone with a boat to visit. Look at fishing tackle. Integrate Row, Row into a variety of learning experiences.

  • 3.

Do this project outdoors. Children make individual boxes, or paint one gigantic appliance box to use as their boat. Crayon resist creates a watery effect.

  • 4.

Draw designs on the sides of a huge cardboard box with Crayola® Construction Paper™ Crayons. Press hard to make intense colors.

  • 5.

Choose a name for your boat. Where is its port? Write the words on your boat hull in big crayon letters.

  • 6.

Cover your work area with recycled newspapers. Put on a Crayola® Art Smock. Use Crayola® Washable Tempera and So Big® Brushes to paint the boat. Notice how the crayon jumps out from the paint. Dry overnight.

  • 7.

What else does your boat need before it can go to sea? Create shiny lights with Crayola® Glitter Glue. Use a blanket for a sail. Make fishing poles, oars, or a pilot’s wheel. Be creative.
