Tug-Along Trains lesson plan

  • 1.

    Notice the grid design of train tracks.

  • 2.

    Watch and listen to trains. Look at the shapes of cars. Talk about how trains move freight and people. Ride on a train. Read stories.

  • 3.

    Keep a variety of boxes on hand.

  • 4.

    To make train cars: Wrap different colors of yarn around small cardboard boxes. Use Crayola® Scissors to cut the ends. Glue yarn securely with Crayola® School Glue. Dry overnight.

  • 5.

    Attach an opened paper clip at each end of the cars as couplings, so they can be hitched together.

  • 6.

    Add lights on engines, passenger cars, and cabooses with Crayola® Glitter Glue.

  • 7.

    To make tracks: Use Crayola® Washable Markers to draw train tracks on plain, heavy paper. Draw in trees, cities, and other details.

  • 8.

    Connect cars with your friends and tug your train along the tracks. All aboard.
