Circle Counters

Circle Counters lesson plan

  • 1.

Collect lids from milk jugs, recycled wood scraps, or similar small, round items. Or shape Crayola® Model Magic® in flat circles and dry.

  • 2.

Recycled objects are great for constructions, pretend play, and lots of uses.

  • 3.

Create real experiences for children to use math concepts: play checkers, match juice cups to children, read clocks, count pretend money.

  • 4.

To make game pieces: Cover a work area with recycled newspaper. Put on your Crayola® Art Smock. Choose five or six Crayola® Washable Tempera Paint colors. Mix colors for more choices. Add a squirt of liquid dish detergent if you are painting plastic.

  • 5.

Divide round items into the same number of piles as you have paint colors. Paint each group a different color with Crayola® Paint Brushes. Dry overnight. Turn them over and paint the other side. Dry overnight.

  • 6.

On a sheet of white paper, draw vertical lines with a Crayola® Washable Marker to divide your sorter into as many columns as you have colors. Draw horizontal lines to make boxes a little bigger than your sorting pieces.

  • 7.

At the bottom of each column, fill in the first box with a marker color that is the same as your painted pieces.

  • 8.

Find creative ways to use your Circle Counters.
