Snazzy Zoo

Snazzy Zoo lesson plan

  • 1.

Take a trip to a zoo or animal preserve. Help children notice animal body parts, shapes, and coloration.

  • 2.

Look at pretend play props, fine art sculptures, and puppets for animal ideas. Sing songs about animals. Lumber along like elephants, stretch necks like giraffes, roar like bears.

  • 3.

Explore the natural habitats of zoo animals. Study about them in books, films, and on the Internet. Find out what they eat, how they live, how fast they can run, and other interesting facts.

  • 4.

Choose a zoo animal that appeals to you. Think about its size, shape, and body parts.

  • 5.

With Crayola® Model Magic®, sculpt the animal. Try different ways to model: roll, pound, add, pull, coil, mold. Use tools such as craft sticks or plastic dinnerware to add texture. Dry overnight.

  • 6.

Cover your work area with newspaper. Put on a Crayola® Art Smock. Use Crayola® Washable Paint and Brushes to paint your animal. Choose either its real color, or fanciful colors. Mix colors to paint golden lions, for example. Dry overnight.
