February 16th is celebrated as Lithuania’s National Day. In 1940, Lithuania became part of the Soviet Union under an agreement between Stalin and Hitler. On March 11, 1990 Lithuania declared independence from the Soviet Union, the first of the Soviet republics to do so. On August 19, 1991, Lithuania's independence was recognized.
