Scuba Aruba

Scuba Aruba lesson plan

Create a mixed media collage displaying information about scuba diving equipment and safety.

  • 1.

Research the physics of scuba diving. Find out about the components of air and the scuba method of breathing under water. Record answers and more questions as they arise. Identify equipment needed to scuba dive: mask, scuba, fins, and snorkel. List safety precautions taken by divers. Share information with classmates.

  • 2.

Draw an underwater scene on white construction paper with Crayola® Construction Paper™ Crayons and Crayola Markers.

  • 3.

Cut colored paper with Crayola Scissors and arrange it to make a collage image of yourself as a scuba diver. Attach your diver to the underwater scene with a Crayola Washable Glue Stick. Include all the equipment needed. Add details with markers.

Benefits

  • Children interview a guest scuba diver or study electronic resources to learn about scuba diving.
  • Students investigate the physics of scuba diving, the gaseous components of air, equipment used, and safety precautions taken by divers.
  • Children create a collage using mixed media to reflect their knowledge about scuba diving, equipment, and safety.

Adaptations

  • Children label collages so they can be used as assessment tools to determine whether children have included all scuba equipment and are aware of the safety precautions necessary.
  • Children post questions on the outside of a folded piece of paper with answers inside the fold for a lift-a-flap display.
  • Groups of children work together to design scuba diving brochures, including answers to questions and drawings of equipment.
