Mosaics are made with small pieces of different-colored clay, glass, tile, stone, shells, jewels, or wood. The pieces are put together to form a picture. They are pressed into wet cement or plaster that has been spread on walls or floors.

Look at pictures of mosaics. Notice how all the mosaics are made of tiny pieces put together. Study drawings by M.C. Escher, a famous Dutch artist. Watch a video about his work. See how some of his art work looks like mosaics.

To make your own mosaics, pretend that the squares on graph paper are tiny pieces you can put together to make a picture. Use Crayola Twistables to color the squares and make your pictures.

Use ideas from M.C. Escher to try some animal or plant pictures of your own. Start your mosaic pictures in the middle and move out to the ends. Make two of every picture or design. Make 12 to 20 different mosaics, all the same size and shape. Cut out the

Cut out the same number and size of shapes from recycled cereal boxes or posterboard. Use Crayola School Glue to glue the mosaics to the cardboard so the blank side shows. Dry.

To play a matching game, turn the mosaics over to the blank side. Arrange mosaics in equal rows. Players take turns flipping over two pieces at a time. If the mosaics match, the player keeps them. If they don't match, flip pieces to the blank side and ret

Make new mosaics to add to your game. Use larger or smaller graph paper squares to make other shapes, such as circles or rectangles. Draw diagonal lines on squares to make triangles.
