Notice when young children begin to be interested in the letters in their names. Suggest this activity as one way to learn the alphabet. See also ABCs-Alphabet Bowl Containers.

The more children do themselves, the more they learn. Several steps of this activity may require some adult assistance, but give children every opportunity to do it on their own.

Talk individually with children about letter names, shapes, and sounds.

To make letters: Write the letters in your name on paper with a Crayola® Construction Paper™ Crayon. Use upper- and lower-case letters.

On cardboard, draw 4-inch high outline letters for your name. Cut them out with Crayola® Scissors.
6.
Place letters backwards on the smooth side of a sheet of fine sandpaper. Trace around letters with crayon. Cut out sandpaper letters.
7.
To make cards: Count the letters in your name. With a ruler, measure that many rectangles, about 2 inches bigger than your tallest letter, on a file folder. Cut out the rectangles. Write your name in crayon on the back.
8.
Use Crayola® School Glue to attach each letter to a card. Dry overnight.
9.
Put all the letters of your name in order. Trace each one with your finger. Feel how wonderfully rough the sandpaper is.
