Letters for Me, Letters for You

Letters for Me, Letters for You lesson plan

  • 1.

Junk mail is treasure for young children. Ask families to recycle flyers for children’s pretend play.

  • 2.

Boost children’s awareness of print as they learn about the post office, e-mail, and other ways to send letters to friends and family. Literacy skills increase as children create simple messages, cards, and letters.

  • 3.

Sort through all kinds of mail: catalogues, ads, samples, e-mail. Visit a post office or package shipping company. Find out how paper letters get from one place to another. Correspond with friends by e-mail.

  • 4.

To make post office boxes: Cover your work area with recycled newspaper. Put on a Crayola® Art Smock. With Crayola® Washable Tempera and So Big® Brushes, paint the inside and outside of a recycled box. Dry overnight.

  • 5.

On an index card, write your name using Crayola® Washable Markers. Attach the card to your post office box with a Crayola® Glue Stick.

  • 6.

To create mail: Design your own letterhead with white paper and markers. Write messages to, and draw pictures for, your friends. Create cards for holidays or celebrations.

  • 7.

After your letter is ready, fold paper to make a pretend envelope. Draw a stamp in the corner. Deliver the mail to the correct post office box. Check your own box for mail.
